Before the introduction of printing in Europe, all books were manuscripts, from Latin, meaning written (scriptus) by hand (manu). The most luxurious manuscripts were literally illuminated with decorations and images made of brightly coloured pigments. Many scribes and artists were monks, especially in the medieval period from the 8th to the 13th century. In eight short videos, the techniques, products and tools for making manuscripts and decorations are illustrated.
