Detail of a poster (1837) against the New Poor Law in the United Kingdom. This law ensured that the poor were housed in workhouses, clothed and fed. In return, the poor had to work for several hours each day. The poor called the workhouses ‘Prisons for the Poor’. There were several riots because of the new law.
