This is a print of the walls of Antioch which were constructed by the Byzantines. They were built above the Orontes River valley. The walls were built to protect the city of Antioch, and the walls were still up and in use when Eleanor of Aquitaine and her husband Louis VII came to visit the city of Antioch during the second crusade. This picture is the same view that Eleanor of Aquitaine would have seen on her trip to the holy land. It was fairly unusual for women to come on crusades, so this event in Eleanor’s life was pretty extraordinary.
