The London Zoo opened on 27 April 1828, attracting 30,000 visitors in its first seven months. The hippopotamus in the picture, named Obaysch, was a gift from the Ottoman Viceroy of Egypt, Abbas Pacsha, in 1850. Obaysch was Britain’s first hippopotamus, and thanks to him, the zoo doubled its visitors that year.
