The jesters depicted by Velázquez constitute one of the most important motifs in his artistic production. In some cases they are isolated, but in others they are seen in the company of other members of the court, and often incorporate meanings that go beyond the simple depiction of physical features. All this has posed countless dilemmas for those who have sought interpretations in which the Sevillian master is seen as an artist with a social conscience, although on the other hand they are seen as works of the author’s implacable objectivity.
