This anonymous composition by a follower of Francisco de Goya is one of a series of bullfighting scenes in various collections, including one in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and another in a private collection in Madrid, all of which are similar in style and technique. They are inspired, with varying degrees of fidelity, by the Goyaesque lithographs known as the Bordeaux Bulls of late 1824. The Prado work depicts the suerte de picadores, with two of them on horseback lunging at the bull, while another gored horse lies dying on the ground.
