Four young women dressed as majas are holding a romper suit in a leafy landscape with a river running through it and a stone building in the background. The game, practised during popular festivals and a rite of farewell to bachelorhood, here symbolises the power of women over men, a general theme of this group and repeated in Goya’s work, with examples in the series of engravings of the Caprichos and the Disparates.
