In Teniers’s painting kermis literally means “church-mass” and is performed as a religious service followed by various festivities as depicted here. Although it is a comedy with great varieties of madness, this scene would still have seemed an appropriate way of honouring the saint. Among these activities are the dances, the music with the piper on the table or the abundant food on the table.
