This 19th-century work is a recreation of the historicist portraits that were so successful at the time. The sitter’s appearance is certainly grotesque, with a dark suit and stiff upper lip in the fashion of the early years of Philip IV’s reign. Overall, this accentuates the expressionism of his features in a style close to that of the painter José María Losada (1826-1896), to whose immediate circle he may have belonged.
