Berchem was the son and pupil of Pieter Claesz, a Haarlem still-life painter. He studied a wide variety of artists and became a member of the Haarlem artistic community. Most of his work is in the Italianate style for which there is no record to date and which may have occurred between 1651 and 1653, or on the other hand through exposure to the work of those who returned from Italy such as Poelenburgh, van Laer, Jan Both or Jan Asselyn, who returned home in the mid-1640s. This landscape depicts how de Berchem’s imaginary Italy has a garden protected by a mountain parde. The subject of this painting depicts the shepherd and muleteer leading their beasts over the mountain passes as was presumably done in Italy as a farming practice.
