Eugenio Lucas Velázquez’s work represents the result of the impression caused by the trial and execution of Jerónimo Merino Cob, the priest Merino, carried out in 1852 as a result of the attempted regicide of Isabel II. The settings in which these intereiores are depicted are caves or dark places, where the protagonists resign themselves to injustice.
