From a lofty perspective, it was the only way Bruegel could make visible the enormous number of figurines showing 230 children engaged in 83 different games, thus creating a painted encyclopaedia of 16th-century children’s entertainment. Among them are common games such as playing with dolls, the swing, making the pine tree, the blind man’s buffalo, blowing soap bubbles, playing tents, as well as other different “games” such as pulling hair, making a procession, creating a bonfire or pushing a wall.
