When studying family structures, it is easy to recognise the importance of the dowry strategy in fixing a large part of social reproduction, whether through sexual egalitarianism from the beginning of marriage, in the development of the conjugal nucleus over time or in the different stages of inheritance. This model of social reproduction reached its greatest heights in the second half of the 18th century, presenting the possibility of accumulating large amounts of property if these strategies were carried out satisfactorily.
Although theoretically the administration of the wife’s dowry is the responsibility of the husband, by separating the property of each of the spouses it is possible to appreciate the gains or losses that each of them has incurred. The same applies when analysing the nature of the assets brought into the marriage as a whole, differentiating also between what each brings to the marriage.

The post The nature of the assets brought by the spouses to the marriage in the Vega baja del Esla (1700-1850) first appeared on History Lab.

The demographic pressure experienced from the 16th century onwards in the north of the peninsula led to a change in agricultural behaviour, more based on collective communal lands than on direct exploitation. The agrarian reality in Asturias seems to indicate that they turned their backs on the sea and focused on inland lands, establishing a more dispersed agrarian economy that led to a marked increase in population, but with a notable temporal and, above all, territorial diversity.
As can be seen in the resource, between 1528 and 1827 there was a notable demographic increase in all the Asturian councils analysed, although with some setbacks such as those experienced in Proaza in 1591 or the even greater one recorded in Grado in 1631. The diversity of territorial behaviour is very present, with the mountain areas showing higher levels of growth than the valleys and coastal areas. On the other hand, from 1631 onwards, the interior continued with its growth rates, but it was the coastal areas and the nearby valleys that considerably increased the rate of growth.

The post Rates of population growth in the Cantabrian regions (1528-1827) first appeared on History Lab.

Thanks to the insurance contracts of Mallorca’s maritime trade, it is possible to offer statistical tables of Mallorcan exports, as well as to study the differentiated value of each type of product.
By examining the insurances of the notary Miquel Boix, a total of 1,008 insurance contracts between 1451 and 1464 can be clarified, most of them centred on 1457 and the two final years, 1463 and 1464. With regard to the origin of the goods, 613 of them had Mallorca as their point of departure and 196 had Mallorca as their destination, with the rest being distributed nationally between Menorca and Ibiza. All in all, the total of the 1,008 contracts amount to 68,391.1 pounds, of which almost 300 contracts belong to the fabric trade. The rest of the goods in terms of their proportion are oil, leather, ship’s hulls, wax and wool.

The post Main products of the Mallorcan maritime trade (1451-1464) first appeared on History Lab.

The urban hierarchy of the Canary Islands is greatly influenced by the development of the economic and urban structure, marking the terrain according to the strategic needs of the islands as a whole. The city is established in the places where the representative organs of power decide to settle: the Crown, the Church and the population.
It can be seen in the resource how, from the 17th century onwards, the situation in the Canary Islands changed, with the predominance of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria shifting towards the socio-economic take-off of Tenerife and La Palma. A large number of foreign merchants settled in both, establishing their estates to export wine and manufactured products to America.
Despite this growth, Santa Cruz de La Palma saw its privileged position assured by the settlement of the power groups, controlling from there a large part of the wealth that circulated around the islands in those years.

The post Population of the cities of the Canary Islands between the 16th and 18th centuries first appeared on History Lab.

An analysis of the wealth and income of the twenty-four members of the Jerez de la Frontera town council in the 18th century shows the divergence between the great patrimonial wealth of this social group and the real income they received, which was much lower than what would be expected for the main power group in the city. This imbalance can be explained by the indirect and intensive exploitation of their rural properties, which were subject to continuous leasing and from which they obtained large economic returns.
If we analyse the properties of this power group (1.1% of the taxpayers in the municipality) according to their economic profile, we discover that their economic base is based on their control of the land, with no less than 24.15% of all the land in Jerez in their possession, highlighting and underlining their social relevance.

The post Income and assets of the twenty-four in Jerez de la Frontera during the 18th century first appeared on History Lab.

From 1570 onwards, more than 11,000 Moriscos, forcibly expelled from their place of origin by the Spanish Crown, were received in Extremadura. The largest group arrived in Extremadura at the end of 1570 (some 6,800 from Granada), with the second wave arriving almost a year later.
In the present case, the distribution of the places of seigniory in Extremadura was carried out in December 1751, with 1,764 Moriscos arriving in the current territories of Extremadura. A third of the Moriscos remained in the capital, with the majority located at the head of each demarcation, while smaller groups were distributed among various villages.
The situation in which these new residents lived varied greatly depending on their destination, as many rural areas of Extremadura at the time were experiencing marked economic hardship, making it even more difficult for these groups from Granada to settle satisfactorily.

The post Distribution of the Moriscos according to the draft distribution of 1571 first appeared on History Lab.
