Aertsen’s composition depicts two figures: a young woman holding a fish in her hand and an older man in the background, treated with simplicity and an unusual economy of resources. Aertsen’s work is not a new departure in genre painting, but he abandoned the moralising vein of his predecessors and contemporaries to depict the everyday life of the bourgeoisie and peasants, incorporating large-scale still lifes that were new in Flemish painting.
