This anonymous painting is a copy of one painted by Strigel – the original is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna – for the Emperor Maximilian. He was responsible for the model for the official portrait of the emperor. The work is thus part of the type of family portrait in which the image of the power of the House of Austria is alluded to. Maximilian I on the left, in profile, is accompanied by other members of his family, who are identified by the inscriptions next to each of them. In the background is Mary of Burgundy, his first wife, and next to her is the son they had together, Philip the Handsome. In the foreground of the composition are the grandchildren. From left to right are Ferdinand I, Charles V and his brother-in-law, Louis II of Hungary. The type of portrait corresponds to a timeless setting in which age does not correspond to appearance.
