The document is a statement by Sebastiana de Torres, 39 years old and a resident of Toledo, on the situation of her family. She declares that her husband, Esteban de Arévalo, a shepherd by trade, has been missing for three years. As a result, since the family’s main breadwinner was missing, Sebastiana had to work in order to support her children. She says that her work as an errand girl earns her 140 reales a year, although 33 reales of this amount goes to pay the rent for the house where they live.

María González, aged 67, was a widow and extremely poor. Her situation led her to live with her two grandchildren: Manuel, 20 years old and a low-wage worker at the inn where they live; and Gregorio, 11 years old. Both grandchildren are in her care due to the premature death of their parents. With no help other than charity, her situation brought her no small amount of worry for her and her grandchildren’s future.

Ana María Delgado, a resident of the parish of San Isidoro de Toledo, declared that she worked as a washerwoman, earning 2 reales a day to support herself. She also said that she was a single woman and that «I have no one to earn them for me». This allusion refers to the absence of her husband, 24 years without him, without knowing his whereabouts or whether he is still alive or dead. Ana María also states that she has to subsist by her own means and that she has a house of her own in which she lives, the rent of which is worth 12 ducats (a method of valuation to refer to the value of the property). This is an example of a single woman seeking her future by working and having a comfortable personal situation.

Hogares solitarios en la España interior en 1753 (%)

La jefatura del hogar siempre ha sido objeto de atención por parte de las ciencias sociales. Ella determina pautas, comportamientos y políticas familiares. En la España interior de 1753 observamos cómo, en general, la mujer era cabeza de familia bajo los parámetros de la viudedad. A partir de los 50 años se incrementan los hogares unipersonales encabezados por mujeres, tendencia ascendente que continúa después de los 65 años. Con la salida de los hijos de la familia y la muerte del esposo, la mujer encontraba su autoridad en ella misma, mostrando más preferencia a la soledad que a las segundas nupcias en tanto que se pudiera mantener económicamente.

Estructuras familiares en el Reino de Valencia, siglos XVIII-XIX

Los diferentes modelos de familias tuvieron variables regionales y locales. Dentro de este último caso nos encontramos con los ejemplos de los municipios de la actual Comunidad Valenciana. Diferenciando zonas urbanas y rurales, vemos cómo los hogares solitarios eran mayores en las ciudades que en el campo, en consecuencia, y de manera inversa, los hogares complejos se imponían en el entorno rural al urbano. La confluencia asentada del modelo conyugal/nuclear de familia hacía que dominaran en ambas esferas con porcentajes similares. Estos datos se afianzan cuando una población semiurbana, entre el campo y la ciudad, como Vinaròs, muestra una tendencia intermedia en sus resultados. Las familias valencianas, al igual que en el resto de España, estaban condicionadas por el nivel económico y la mentalidad propia de las localidades. La riqueza, posesión de la propiedad, acceso a los recursos y posibilidad de ascensos social moldeaban el modelo de familia.

Mujeres cabezas de familia en la España interior en 1753 (%)

To speak of female heads of household in inland Spain is to speak of widowhood. Only a tenth were single and their number decreased even more from the age of 50 onwards. Women over 50 accounted for 60 percent of female-headed households, compared to 30 percent of men at the same age. This difference, apart from the higher male mortality rate, reflected to a large extent the unequal behaviour of the sexes when it came to remarriage.
