The University of Helsinki (UH) is the oldest and largest institution of academic education in Finland, an international scientific community of 40,000 students and researchers. The University of Helsinki is also one of the best multidisciplinary research universities in the world and it is the only Finnish university to consistently rank in the top 100 of international university rankings<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe University of Helsinki seeks solutions for global challenges and creates new ways of thinking for the best of humanity. Through the power of science, the University has contributed to society, education and welfare since 1640. The University of Helsinki employs approximately 7600 people of which 60% are teachers and researchers. The high-quality research carried out by the university creates new knowledge for educating diverse specialists in various fields, and for utilisation in social decision-making and the business sector. In 2017, University of Helsinki researchers produced 11,446 publications. Of peer-reviewed academic publications half are produced as a result of international cooperation.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tUniversity of Helsinki belongs to several international networks, one of them being UNA Europa, a network that is part of European Commission\u2019s \u201cEuropean Universities Initiative\u201d. In addition, UH is the only Finnish university to be a member of the League of European Research Universities, or LERU, an association of 23 leading European universities promoting the conditions and opportunities for basic research in Europe. Since the beginning of the current Erasmus+ period, UH has participated to over fifty Erasmus+ Key Action 2 projects.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSeven experts are involved in the work group (teacher training unit for history and social studies), that consists of one (full) professor, one professor emerita and five university lecturers. We are a part of Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Helsinki is Finland\u2019s leading unit of research and teaching in Educational Sciences and Teacher Education. Our faculty as numbers are following: 3000 students, 650 degrees, 500 teaching and research staff, 34 professors, 500 peer reviewed publications per year.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOur group studies issues that are linked to teaching history and social sciences. We produce information for developing teacher education and to awaken the public debate regarding socially significant themes within our field. In the field of didactics of history and social sciences, focus areas include the development of critical thinking, perceptions of various economic-political phenomena, and how these are formed. People use history to explain the present and to assess future forecasts. This phenomenon, called historical consciousness, is among our key research subjects. We study how people use history in their everyday life, as well as how they understand history. We also study how various groups\u2014young children and immigrants, for example\u2014form their conceptions of the past. Our third research focus relates to the history of education. Our objects of interest include the historical formation of teacherhood, the significance of schools in the formation of civic society, and the development of teacher education. In addition to research, our group produces materials that support history and social sciences teaching, as well as organising developmental projects in the field. The research group is responsible for the organisation of social studies education and organises postgraduate studies in the subject.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
