The Research Institute of Child Development and Education (RICDE) is one of four research institutes within the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG) of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and aims to gain knowledge and advance theories on cognitive and social-emotional learning in the context of micro, meso and macro influencing factors.\n\n\n\n<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFurthermore it aims to develop, evaluate and improve teaching and substantiate educational innovations. The domain specific learning programme of the RICDE coordinated by professor Van Boxtel focuses on instruction and learning processes in various subjects. The mission of this research team is to promote meaningful learning and educational achievement in various school subjects and domains in secondary and primary education, such as writing, reading, literature, history, social science, foreign languages, mathematics and art\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tResearchers (2 professors, 1 associate professor, 4 assistant professors and 2 post-docs) of the domain specific learning programme contribute to the teacher training programmes of the University of Amsterdam and professional development programs for teachers. 20 PhD students participate in this research group. About 250 to 300 students per year enter the teacher training programmes. These students have a master degree and are prepared to teach in uppers secondary education.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRelevant fields of expertise are the teaching and learning of historical thinking and reasoning, developing nuanced epistemological beliefs about the nature and construction of historical knowledge, the design of educative materials and (formative) assessment, multiperspectivity in history lessons, teaching about sensitive history and heritage, and training and professionalization of history teachers.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tProf. dr. Carla van Boxtel, dr. Jannet van Drie, dr. Geerte Savenije and dr. Gerhard Stoel have expertise in the field of teaching historical thinking and reasoning, and inclusive history education, published widely about these topics in scientific peer reviewed journals, and coordinated \/ supervised various research projects.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAll key persons involved in the project have expertise in teacher training, teacher professionalization, design and intervention studies, and the design of educational materials and activities (for both secondary school students and (student) history teachers). For example, Savenije developed a training module for our teacher training programme about how to address sensitive issues, multculturalism, inclusive education and equity. Van Boxtel was editor of a much used textbook series that included history textbooks for secondary school, learning activities and digital resources.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
