En \u00e9l, se controla al pirata ficticio Edward Kenway, abuelo de Ratohnhak\u00e9:t\u00f6n -protagonista de la anterior entrega-, en sus aventuras por el Caribe de la Edad de oro de la pirater\u00eda, a lo largo de las primeras d\u00e9cadas del siglo XVIII. La jugabilidad incluye, por primera vez, un importante componente mar\u00edtimo, pudiendo navegar por las aguas de las islas de Cuba, Jamaica, Nassau, etc., zonas en la que se desarrolla su gameplay.
