El monasterio fue promovido por Felipe II y en su construcci\u00f3n participaron, entre otros, los arquitectos Juan Bautista de Toledo, Giovanni Battista Castello y Juan de Herrera, a quien debemos la caracter\u00edstica estructura final del edificio.
