Los tercios espa\u00f1oles fueron una unidad militar que se consider\u00f3 como una de las mejores infanter\u00edas de todos los tiempos. Aunque existieron antecedentes en las falanges maced\u00f3nicas, las legiones romanas o el ej\u00e9rcito suizo, su g\u00e9nesis se encuentra en las innovaciones del Gran Capit\u00e1n, quien ciment\u00f3 un ej\u00e9rcito permanente, profesional y disciplinado. Surgen alrededor de 1530 en la defensa de los territorios italianos de Carlos V, dando origen as\u00ed a los tercios viejos (N\u00e1poles, Sicilia y Lombard\u00eda). Su denominaci\u00f3n se debe a tres armas b\u00e1sicas (pica, arcabuz y espada con rodela) o los tres cuerpos italianos. En sus filas combatieron borgo\u00f1ones, italianos y alemanes, por lo que tuvieron un car\u00e1cter multicultural donde los espa\u00f1oles representaron un quinto del total y eran la columna vertebral del mismo. Dentro de los tercios espa\u00f1oles, estos solo pod\u00edan ser comandados por aquellos que hablasen castellano, catal\u00e1n, portugu\u00e9s o sardo (lengua de Cerde\u00f1a). Cualquier otro ten\u00eda vetado el ascenso.
