Este aumento de poblaci\u00f3n fue especialmente significativo en la ciudad de Sevilla que en el siglo XVI llego a superar los 100.000 habitantes gracias al desarrollo econ\u00f3mico tra\u00eddo por el comercio con Am\u00e9rica. De hecho, el puerto de Sevilla ejerci\u00f3 el monopolio del comercio americano, al establecer en la ciudad la Casa de Contrataci\u00f3n (1503). Con ello, se convirti\u00f3 en una de las ciudades europeas m\u00e1s importantes, pues por ella entraban las mercanc\u00edas procedentes del Nuevo Mundo que posteriormente ser\u00edan comercializadas, a trav\u00e9s de diversas rutas, por toda Europa.
