La consolidaci\u00f3n de este g\u00e9nero ven\u00eda refrendada por la literatura sat\u00edrica y moralizante de los dos siglos anteriores, que hund\u00eda sus ra\u00edces en las coplas de campesinos del siglo XIV compuestos por los caballeros durante las luchas campesinas. El t\u00e9rmino kerel, utilizado para designar a campesinos libres, pas\u00f3 a emplearse para describir al ga\u00f1\u00e1n (campesino zafio, tosco y rudo con un comportamiento dominado por los instintos y las pasiones que se contrapon\u00eda a la conducta de la clase burguesa). La escena se desarrolla en el interior campesino en el que se encuentra un hombre sentado de espaldas al espectador, una anciana sentada con su brazo derecho sobre un tonel y un libro abierto en sus manos junto a un ni\u00f1o que apoya su brazo sobre la pierna de la anciana. La escena parece representar la hilaridad provocada por una observaci\u00f3n jocosa, quiz\u00e1 relacionada con la \u00faltima lectura de la anciana.
