A la derecha est\u00e1 retratado su \u00edntimo amigo, Georges de Selve, obispo de Lavaur. El reatrao fue pintado en un tiempo de convulsi\u00f3n pol\u00edtica en Europa en el momento en el que el papa rechaz\u00f3 anular el matrimonio de Enrique VIII, rey de Inglaterra, con su primera mujer, Catalina de Arag\u00f3n, lo que provoc\u00f3 una ruptura con la Iglesia de Roma y que el monarca ingl\u00e9s casara con Ana Bolena. La disposici\u00f3n de los objetos en la mesa aluden a la discordia: el libro de aritm\u00e9tica, por ejemplo, es abierto por la p\u00e1gina que concierne a la divisi\u00f3n matem\u00e1tica. Por otra parte, el retrato es la suprema disposici\u00f3n de las habilidades de Holbein a la hora de la composici\u00f3n de im\u00e1genes manipulando el \u00f3leo para recrear variedad de texturas. Visto desde un \u00e1ngulo particular, la sombre entre los dos hombres se convierte en una calavera.
