Lavinia Fontana (1552-1614), artista nacida en Bolonia, era hija del pintor Prospero Fontana, quien la form\u00f3 en el entorno del hogar familiar. Fue la encargada de dirigir su propio taller y sus obras fueron requeridas por el papa Clemente VIII. Su figura destaca por haber cultivado g\u00e9neros pict\u00f3ricos que normalmente estaban fuera del alcance femenino, como los retratos de grupo, las pinturas de altar, el paisaje y, especialmente, cuadros de tem\u00e1tica mitol\u00f3gica en los que inclu\u00eda desnudos, detalle altamente peculiar. En este peque\u00f1o autorretrato, realizado con motivo de su compromiso con Giovanni Paolo Zappi, Lavinia quiso dejar constancia de su amplia cultura, s\u00f3lida educaci\u00f3n y cuidados modales.
