Este conflicto enfrent\u00f3 de una parte a las Provincias Unidas (a quienes se sum\u00f3 Espa\u00f1a, el Sacro Imperio Romano y el elector de Brandeburgo-Prusia) frente a Francia (junto a Inglaterra, Suecia, M\u00fcnster y Colonia) que culmin\u00f3 con la victoria gala convirti\u00e9ndose en la primera potencia militar y comercial tras el tratado de Nimea (1678). La ofensiva francesa rompi\u00f3 las posiciones del Rin el 4 de mayo en una de las muestras m\u00e1s impresionantes de poder militar del siglo XVII, los franceses ocuparon primeramente Tongeren, Maaseik y Valkenburg. Dejando atr\u00e1s a 10,000 hombres, el ej\u00e9rcito franc\u00e9s avanz\u00f3 a lo largo del Rin, capturando Rheinber y Orsoy sin resistencia. Sin embargo, Wesel era la fortaleza m\u00e1s importante.
