En 1788, Manuel Gonz\u00e1lez Guiral, Presidente de la Casa de Contrataci\u00f3n, instituci\u00f3n encargada de organizar las expediciones comerciales a Am\u00e9rica, aprob\u00f3 el env\u00edo de diferentes personas a las minas de Nueva Espa\u00f1a y Reino de Santa Fe. Entre ellas estaba Fausto Elhuyar, hermano de Juan Jos\u00e9 Elhuyar y Director de minas en M\u00e9xico, que viajar\u00eda junto a su mujer y alg\u00fan criado.
