Un grupo de comerciantes donostiarras fundaron en 1728 la Real Compa\u00f1\u00eda Guipuzcoana de Caracas cuya finalidad era dotar a la provincia de un circuito comercial privilegiado. Gracias a una concesi\u00f3n real, la Compa\u00f1\u00eda dispon\u00eda del monopolio del comercio del cacao, al represi\u00f3n de la pirater\u00eda y el contraband en esa zona del Caribe. Esta fundaci\u00f3n rompi\u00f3 con el monopolio de ciudades como Sevilla y C\u00e1diz, si bien la competencia, la caida de precios y la oposici\u00f3n venezolana provocaron la b\u00fasqueda de alternatovas comerciales para una Compa\u00f1\u00eda que sufr\u00eda las consecuencias.
