La iglesia cat\u00f3lica se caracteriz\u00f3 por una enorme capacidad de adaptaci\u00f3n a diversas formas de transmitir el mensaje religioso del cristianismo. En muchas ocasiones, se tuvieron que recurrir a recursos que resultaran atractivos a los fieles por la dificultad de insistir en el libro como fuente de transmisi\u00f3n de la fe. Por ejemplo, en la edad media, dada la escas\u00edsima tasa de alfabetizados, se procedi\u00f3 a una transmisi\u00f3n del mensaje religioso a trav\u00e9s del arte figurado, convirtiendo el relato b\u00edblico en una secuencia de im\u00e1genes que representaban el contenido del texto. En este caso, se acude a las representaciones teatrales como forma de transmitir determinados mensajes religiosos a un p\u00fablico que se sit\u00faa en el medio rural hacia el interior y como casi todo el espectro social del momento, necesitaba de una adaptaci\u00f3n del medio para hacerle llegarle llegar el mensaje.
