Valeriano Domínguez’s painting reflects an Elizabethan, intimate interior in which a family of four members with different attitudes and gestures is embedded. The centre of the composition is occupied by the mother, seated with her infant son in her arms, with the light falling on her in particular. She wears a voluminous skirt with many folds. At her feet lies a rug and a balloon; to the right, one of her daughters is holding a rattle, possibly for the little one on her knees. The father, on the left of the composition, occupies a sombre, resting position, accompanied at his feet by a black dog. The interior is that of a bourgeois family, decorated with period furniture, sober and elegant decoration in harmony with the type of clothing.
