Brueghel’s composition presents an opening dance at a country fair. This is a traditional leaping dance that was performed by two couples preceding anyone else who wished to take part. The couple in the foreground hurry to the dance but are eventually distracted by the scene on the left. This scene also shows the atmosphere of the moment where a piper is in charge of providing the music while others drink, eat and quarrel.
