Burrini’s drawing depicts a figure in profile holding a basket of vegetables with a staff. Popular types bordering on the studio were common in 17th-century Bolognese painting and drawing from the Carracci onwards, and reached their peak in the middle years of the century. Thus, in 17th-century Europe, the caricature of the peasant figure inherited from the Flemish tradition was further developed.
