The anonymous painting depicts a bullfight in the Plaza Mayor, which has been fitted out for the purpose with wooden latticework as barriers and raised stands at the mouths of the street. In the moat, several knights are accompanied by a number of footmen dressed in liveries of their own colours while a bull is being bucked off. Philip IV presides over the spectacle from the royal balcony of the Casa de la Panadería, which looks as it did before the fire it suffered in the 1670s. Soldiers of the Royal Guard guard under the royal balcony.
