The Mauritshuis owes its name to Count Johan Maurits (1604-1679), for whom the building was constructed in 1640. In the 19th century it was converted into a museum to house the Royal Cabinet of Paintings. Its collection is centred on paintings from the Dutch Golden Age (17th century), so it is possible to admire in its rooms works by Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Frans Hals and Vermeer, by whom the museum has three works, one of which is The Girl with the Pearl Earring.
