The work related to the original Caspar Netscher leaves the viewer free to interpret it. This composition was certainly popular at the time, resulting in several copies of the original in the Alte Piankothek in Munich. Paintings with musicians playing were enjoyed in 17th-century Holland. These works were purely decorative, but sometimes harboured moments of emotion that provided opportunities for flirtation. Perhaps, because of the musical setting, they represent the harmony of love. Whatever the main motif, this work invites free interpretation and discussion of stories.
