Titian’s painting, enlarged by Carducho in 1625, commemorates two events of particular importance in 1625: the defeat of the Turkish army at Lepanto and the birth of the infant Ferdinand, heir to the throne. The canvas is therefore an ex-voto in which the prudent monarch thanks heaven for the gifts he received. Carducho’s enlargement was intended to match the painting in size with Charles V in Muhlberg, a paternal symbol, thus pairing the two paintings.
