In this composition Teniers depicts an everyday situation in rural societies. A healer, or country doctor, heals a peasant’s foot using his rustic tools. Behind them, in the background, a woman and a servant girl watch the action with concern. The presence of the owl as a symbol of wisdom alluding to medicine is also noteworthy, although it could be considered a criticism, as it would link up with the Flemish canon in which burlesque representations are frequent.
