The El Escorial Conspiracy as seen by an exiled Jesuit (1808)

The document deals with the so-called Conspiracy of El Escorial from the point of view of the Jesuit exile. This conspiracy consisted of a plot led by Prince Ferdinand of Bourbon to depose Manuel Godoy. It is suspected that the conspiracy was ultimately intended to remove Charles IV from the throne. The Ferdinand attempts failed on 28 October 1807 when the King ordered Ferdinand’s arrest. How did the Jesuits deal with this attempt? The conspiracy was viewed sympathetically; the diary of the Jesuit Manuel Luengo gives evidence of the thoughts of this group: Ferdinand was a victim of Godoy’s political abuses and was entitled to act.

Minutes of the Extraordinary General Assemblies of the Señorío de Vizcaya

Printed minutes of the Extraordinary General Meetings of the Lordship of Biscay, held on 26, 27 and 28 August 1808 in Bilbao, and presided over by José Domingo de Mazarredo, Minister of the Navy. Joseph I Bonaparte was present at these meetings.

Jose de Mazarredo Salazar (1745-1812), born in Bilbao, reached the rank of Admiral and Lieutenant General of the Navy. One of the most outstanding sailors in the history of Spain, he was a man of science as well as an outstanding organiser of naval tactics. Author of various works and leader of several scientific expeditions, his military work did not prevent him from presiding over the General Assemblies of Vizcaya in 1808 in which Joseph Bonaparte was sworn in as Lord of Vizcaya.

Gross marriage rates in Santo Domingo de la Frontera (Baja California), 1780-1808

After the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767, the religious missions they had founded in Baja California were placed in the hands of the Franciscans the following year, who faced new circumstances – internal and external. The Dominicans, however, reached the California peninsula in October 1772, but it was not until May 1773 that the transfer of the missions established under the supervision of the Franciscan Fray Francisco Palou and the Dominican Fray Vicente de Mora took place. The high number of marriages in 1778 indicates the first approach of the missionaries to their pastoral flock, consecrating the profane relationships that individuals had before the arrival of the religious and military. After 1807, fourteen marriages were recorded in the mission, although a respective decline began, which reinforces the idea that around 1810 a process of depopulation began, paralleling the decline in the number of baptisms.

Crisis of the Ancient Regime

Kairos is an educational project of the National Institute of Educational Technologies and Teacher Training of the Ministry of Education, directed by Dr. Antonio Rodríguez de las Heras. Along with methodological contributions aimed at reinforcing the teaching of history, it contains proposals for the development of History content taught in Secondary Education and Baccalaureate. This content refers to the unit “The crisis of the Ancien Régime” for the subject of Spanish History Baccalaureate (2006).
