The Gran Enciclopedia Aragonesa (GEA) was first published in 1981, directed by Eloy Fernández Clemente. At the end of 2002, the digitalisation of its contents began and in 2003 the first version of the GEA Online was launched, with the collaboration of the Departments of Education and Science and Technology of the Government of Aragon. We access here to the History section of the Gran Enciclopedia Aragonesa (GEA) online, to focus on the political, social, economic and cultural characteristics of the 18th century in Aragon. The topics are organised into blocks, some of them being: the Bourbons and the War of Succession, the promulgation of the Nueva Planta Treaties, the emergence of the Aragonese party around the figure of the Count of Aranda, the Aragonese Enlightenment, Baroque art, the struggle between the bourgeoisie and the nobility or the life of the most disadvantaged. In addition, the encyclopaedia contains some didactic sections such as revision tests, timelines, etc.

The post The 18th century in Aragon first appeared on History Lab.

Collaborative blog of IES Miguel Catalán to celebrate the IV Centenary of Miguel de Cervantes where different topics are explained. Among them, we have this short article about the different means of transport in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. With the beginning in the 16th century of the post office service linking the places where the Spanish Court resided with the main European urban centres, this post office service was extended to other Spanish cities. The conditions of the terrain and other conditioning factors such as the capacity of the horses would play an important role in the development of what we can call the first “taxis” in history.

The post Means of transport in the 16th and 17th centuries first appeared on History Lab.

Pamphlet praising Berwick's victory at Almansa and intimidating the towns of the Crown of Aragon that supported the Austracist pretender

The War of the Spanish Succession pitted two pretenders to the throne against each other. On the one side, Philip V of Bourbon and on the other, Charles of the House of Austria. In the conflict, the territories of the Crown of Aragon, such as Valencia, Aragon and Catalonia, took sides with the Austracist contender (some of them after swearing allegiance to Philip V). The balance between the two sides was broken by the decisive confrontation that took place at the Battle of Almansa on 25 April 1707, where Philip of Bourbon’s army emerged victorious. As a result, those territories that supported the Austracist contender experienced repression in which the nobility was forced to flee to the Austrian Empire, while the foral system was dismantled. The new monarch had claimed that these territories were treacherous, so he used the legitimate right of conquest to change the legislation in force. The belligerence and uncertainty generated by the Nueva Planta edicts demanded clarification from the monarch, who specified that the repressive measures would in no way concern those who had been loyal to him in the territories in question.

The post Folleto Bonsoms, no. 893 first appeared on History Lab.
