The armour is part of an armour known as the KD, after the initials on the left shoulder, in keeping with the tradition that armour was given its own name according to its decoration or the events to which it was linked. With the initials KD, Karolus Divus, Charles V linked his name to the Divus (divine) title of the Roman emperors. Kolman forged it around 1525 at a very special time in the emperor’s life: in 1520 he was crowned emperor in Aachen; in 1525 he defeated Francis I at Pavia and in 1526 he married Isabella of Portugal in Seville. At his entrance to Seville, the triumphal arch dedicated to Glory was crowned by Fame and already bore the expression Divus Carolvs, and around his neck he wore the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, founded in 1430 by Felipe III the Good, Duke of Burgundy and the Emperor’s great-great-grandfather. The order was placed under the patronage of the Virgin Mary and Saint Andrew, patron saint of the House of Burgundy.

The post Armour of the KD of Emperor Charles V first appeared on History Lab.
