]]> This work depicts the interior of the Knights’ Hall, known as the Ridderzaal, in the Binnenhof in The Hague during the Great General Assembly of 1651. Inside, flags and banners captured from the enemy hang from the ceiling. The representatives of the seven united provinces of the Dutch Republic were gathered in the hall when Governor William II died at the end of 1650. The following year it was decided to appoint a new incumbent when the war was over and the republic felt more able to face its future without the Orange dynasty.
