The resource shows the battle that took place in the fields of Almansa, on 25 April 1707, during the confrontation between Habsburgs and Bourbons in the context of the War of Succession (1701-1715), for the succession to the Crown of Spain. In this confrontation, Philip V’s troops defeated those of Archduke Charles of Austria. The victory of the Bourbon troops was not decisive for the war, but it did open the gates of the Kingdom of Valencia, which was occupied by the Bourbon army. This entailed the loss of its Fueros, when Philip V enacted the Nueva Planta Decree in 1707

The post The Battle of Almansa first appeared on History Lab.

Its aim is to provide teachers and students interested in history with a series of titles that deal with different topics, whether political, social, cultural, economic or religious, covering different historical periods. It is an open, non-profit project, where its promoters encourage collaboration from other history experts, since the audiovisual materials are incorporated from other links on the web. The work presented here follows a documentary format on the arrival in Mataró of Queen Isabella Christina of Brunswick and her husband, Archduke Charles III, in the context of the War of the Spanish Succession that pitted the House of Habsburg against the Bourbons.

The post War of the Spanish Succession: The entry of the Habsburgs through Mataró first appeared on History Lab.

This audio explains the main characteristics of walled cities in the Hapsburg period and the cities that were the maritime frontier of Spanish possessions in the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Caribbean. Firstly, the subject is approached from an architectural and construction point of view, making a comparison between the different port cities. Secondly, the importance of fortification goes beyond the simple defensive wall, they are also frontiers of power, with a strong symbolic character, where the city itself acts as a political, economic and military centre, especially in coastal cities. These are the gateways to maritime trade, in short, to the connection between continents.

The post City and frontier between the Mediterranean and the Hapsburg Atlantic first appeared on History Lab.

According to the presentation made by the Museo del Prado itself, the Didactic Guide is based on the need to promote the association of museums and educational institutions to create joint strategies to overcome gender inequalities through a critical approach to the history and theories of art. The project is part of “Didactics 2.0 Museums in Feminine”, a project that is the result of joint work between a team from the Feminist Research Institute of the Complutense University of Madrid, the e-Women Association and the teams from the Museums participating in the project: Museo del Prado, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Museo del Traje and Museo Nacional de Cerámica González Martí. The itineraries prepared by Antonia Fernández Valencia, Marián López Fernández Cao and Asunción Bernárdez Rodal address two basic themes: Women and power and Women’s jobs. According to these authors, although they are clearly related to each other, we can say that they have a profoundly complementary character from a social point of view, since the first one basically includes the works and biographies of women from royal and noble houses, while the second one, even including some examples of women from these groups due to their political activity, focuses essentially on the works of women from the middle and working classes. Both itineraries choose different works that put us in contact with different aspects of women in history and can lead us in turn to different themes of the History of Spain in the Modern Age. They are divided into several blocks: Discourse on motherhood, devotion, power and women’s knowledge; Queens and regents in Hapsburg Spain; Our daily work; Family portraits; and Women with their own name. With a clear methodology in terms of objectives and content, as well as the keys to analysis that are of most interest, in each section there is a section of proposed activities and complementary activities for students. And at the end, a series of appendices are added which deal with aspects related to the portraits, questioning the social situation or abounding in lines of conceptual work which can be expanded on later by resorting to other primary sources or historiography.

The post The history of women in the Prado Museum.
