Jose de Mazarredo Salazar (1745-1812), born in Bilbao, reached the rank of Admiral and Lieutenant General of the Navy. One of the most outstanding sailors in the history of Spain, he was a man of science as well as an outstanding organiser of naval tactics. Author of various works and leader of several scientific expeditions, his military work did not prevent him from presiding over the General Assemblies of Vizcaya in 1808 in which Joseph Bonaparte was sworn in as Lord of Vizcaya.

The post Offices of José Domingo de Mazarredo, Minister of Marina. first appeared on History Lab.

In 1765, Cadiz’s monopoly on trade with America was ended, granting freedom of trade to eight Spanish seaports. In 1778 the Decree of Free Trade with America was promulgated. This prompted the regions peripheral to the Court, which had invested in different types of industries to trade with America. In this context, two of the ports that benefited were Bilbao and San Sebastian.

The post Printed matter on free trade for Spanish America in the ports of Bilbao and San Sebastián first appeared on History Lab.

The following engraved print omits any reference to the draughtsman. The original engraving belongs to the fifth booklet, published between 1779 and 1783. Separate print from: Cruz Cano and Juan de la Olmedilla (1734-1790), depicts the image of a villager or also known as “jebo”, which according to Emiliano de Arriaga’s Lexicon of Bilbao means “villager”, i.e. a stocky young man, with rough manners and forms, but with a noble and honourable background. There is an abundance of soft colours, with red standing out among the more muted tones. The shaded lines also stand out, showing the figure’s pose. The background of the image shows no elements, and the sparse vegetation gives the landscape a certain static character, making the main figure stand out even more.

The post Jebo or villager from the vicinity of Bilbao first appeared on History Lab.

Baptisms in Bilbao according to the spatial distribution of the parishes that reflect the changes in urban demography during the 17th century

The post Number of baptised in the urban area of Bilbao and its distribution by parish (17th century) first appeared on History Lab.

One of the forms of demographic control in the Modern Age was the accounting of people in the parish registers. This resource shows the number of baptisms performed in the parishes of an urban environment, Bilbao, during the 17th century. The importance of the figures for each of them is accompanied by the relevance of their spatial distribution throughout the city. The decrease and increase of baptisms is directly related to the number of parishioners in the tempos and, in turn, to urban demographic changes. Consequently, the author shows us how the growth of the suburbs, reflected in the parish of San Nicolás, contrasted with the decrease in baptisms in the central area, under the jurisdiction of the parishes of Santiago and San Antón. The change in the evolutionary trend of urban demography was parallel to the stagnation of trade, the main economic activity in Bilbao and other cities on the Cantabrian coast with similar trends.

The post Number of baptised in the urban area of Bilbao and its distribution by parish (17th century) first appeared on History Lab.
