A work by Gherardo delle Notti (Gerrit van Honthorst), a Dutch Caravaggesque painter who specialised in nocturnal scenes. It is a scene of vanity, due to the fleetingness of time that is the pleasure of music. But it has a second reading, the theft of the singer’s amulet by the other three characters.

The post The concert (The theft of the amulet) first appeared on History Lab.

Emblem of Baroque sculpture. A masterpiece by Bernini, representing one of the Metamorphoses narrated by Ovid.
