A peasant or labourer sits eating beans with a wooden spoon. On the table are onions, bread, a plate of vegetable pie, a half-full glass of wine and a brightly striped earthenware jug. In the picture, everything is simple and homely. The food, the man and his clothing demonstrate the social status of a labourer on the land. To this must be added the importance of pointing out not only the customs, but also the diet that European peasants and, specifically, Italians may have had at the time during the 16th century.

The post The bean canteen first appeared on History Lab.
