]]> Saraceni’s work, unlike those of Campi, Passerotti and Beuckelaer, shows a different characterisation of the peasants, which tended to border on the grotesque. Here the emphasis is on the representation of the varied merchandise on display, which has moralising connotations for the viewer. While adjusting the price of two birds, the naïve peasant does not realise that the young man is stealing a cock, which he secretly grabs with his left hand.
