]]> The scene takes place inside a peasant hut where a man and a woman are singing and reading the words of the song on a piece of paper that the man is holding in his hands. They are accompanied by two musicians. One plays the violin standing on a stool while the other, seated with his back to the audience, plays the hurdy-gurdy. Behind them is a man seated with what might be a jug in his hands, and another man also seated in front of the fireplace, next to whom beer is being served. This type of rustic kitchen interior with a still life of household utensils on one side and figures on the other was pioneered in Rotterdam by the brothers Cornelis and Herman Saftleven in the early 1630s and cultivated by the Van Ostade brothers in Haarlem.
