The Spanish Inquisition was an institution founded in 1478 by the Catholic Monarchs with the main purpose of maintaining Catholic orthodoxy in their kingdoms. It had its precedents in similar institutions that had existed in Europe since the 12th century, especially in France. Under the direct control of the Spanish monarchy, it was in charge of investigating converts, Moors, Protestants and all those practices that went against the orthodoxy of the Catholic Church. It was most active between the 15th and 17th centuries, and was initially very severe. In the early years, after its implementation, there were many trials and death sentences, and its activity progressively decreased until the 18th century, when it ceased to have the weight it had had in previous centuries. In its early stages, it was mainly focused on the repression of Jews and converts, which would end in exile or forced conversion. In a second period, towards the second half of the 16th century, the Inquisition was mainly concerned with the Moorish problem and the Protestant centres, centred to a greater extent in Valladolid and Seville. After the expulsion of the Moors in 1609, there was a calmer period in which executions decreased, although the court was freer, from 1643, with the fall of the Count-Duke of Olivares, to carry out its activities with greater severity, increasing the number of convictions and executions. The activity of the Inquisition diminished throughout the 18th century, with the arrival of the Enlightenment. It was definitively abolished in 1834, during the regency of María Cristina de Borbón, after its abolition was approved at the Cortes de Cádiz in 1812

The post Criminals condemned to death by the Inquisition first appeared on History Lab.

Explanatory video about the scientific revolution and the advances in art, with the expansion of the Baroque. The Renaissance humanists with their critical spirit had challenged many traditional principles and beliefs. Throughout the 17th century, this evolution culminated in the application of new scientific methods that were fundamental to the scientific revolution that took place from that time onwards in the 17th century, where the scientific method was consolidated in an era in which theocentrism predominated, i.e. everything revolved around God. This laid the foundations of modern science through the principles of experimentation or empiricism. In short, Humanism’s evaluation of man gradually pushed religious beliefs, which had dominated science in medieval society, into the background. In this way, progress was made in the knowledge of physics, medicine, astronomy and biology, among other disciplines. In architecture, sumptuous palaces and religious temples were designed. The taste for decoration of both exteriors and interiors increased. In sculpture, the quest for exalted movement, a certain naturalism, theatricality and decorativism increased.

The post The scientific revolution and baroque art.

Radio documentary in which prestigious historians analyse the complex personality and reign of Philip II, his Empire and the difficulties in managing it, as well as his determination to defend the Catholic religion. It highlights his facet as a Renaissance prince who built El Escorial and treasured fourteen thousand volumes in his library; as an art collector (Bosch, Titian, Flemish painters, etc.) or as a promoter of town planning and fortifications in America, in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Panama, for example. It deals with his image distorted by the Black Legend as a fanatic king and defender of the Inquisition, which was propagated by his enemies in England and the Netherlands. Apart from self-interested manipulations, the video also analyses the dark points of his reign, from the death of his son, the infant Charles, to the long and continuous wars he waged as a champion of Catholicism. Wars against England, the Netherlands and the Turks left the country exhausted and on the verge of ruin with several bankruptcies. In Documentos RNE, Modesta Cruz tackles the controversial figure of Philip II through leading specialists such as the professors of Modern History at the Complutense University of Madrid, Enrique Martínez and Fernando Bouza. Also featured are commentaries by Geoffrey Parker and John Elliot, and the late Manuel Fernández Álvarez and Joseph Pérez, great connoisseurs of the period of Philip II.

The post Philip II, Renaissance prince and champion of the Catholic faith first appeared on History Lab.
