Information at the request of Gonzalo de Guzmán, before the governor and adelantado Diego Velázquez, about the expedition of Hernán Cortés to New Spain, taking with him Alonso Fernández Puertocarrero and Francisco Montejo, a certain Alaminos as pilot and a Bautista as master. They were determined to follow up the discoveries made earlier by Juan de Grijalva. Arriving at a certain place, they took a ship, and loading it with gold and other riches, they sailed along dark and dangerous roads, fleeing lest they be caught.

The maravedí was a Spanish coin used between the 12th and 19th centuries, whose minting began during the reign of Alfonso VI after the conquest of Toledo in 1085. During the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, other types of coins appeared, such as the ducats. One of these, the “white” coin, had a value of half a maravedí. This small coin, of little value and small size, has survived to the present day through the expression “estar sin blanca” (to be penniless). The two maravedí coin of the Catholic Monarchs has inscriptions on the obverse and reverse. On the obverse we can read the direct allusion to the monarchs who minted the coin in Latin “FERNANDVS – ET – ELISA” (Ferdinand and Isabella). A castle with three towers appears on the reverse. The reverse reads ‘REX – ET – REGINA – KAS’, thus referring to their status as kings

The post Coin of 2 maravedíes of the Catholic Monarchs first appeared on History Lab.

Educational video for children with the aim of teaching about the discovery of America, Columbus’ voyages and why the continent was so named. It also explains the consequences of this encounter between two worlds, including the arrival in Europe of new crops such as corn, potatoes, tomatoes, etc. With an entertaining narration, maps, images and other elements are included to make the exhibition more dynamic and attractive. It is a short interactive educational resource, with a duration of 3.34 minutes, which questions the student about the content of the subject as the video progresses. A montage that can be found without interruption at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TD24cI-1bxw&feature=emb_title. The questions are very appropriate for the primary school level, simple but clear and direct. There are several options for answering them

The post The discovery of America first appeared on History Lab.
