Conquest of Mexico. Moctezuma’s reception

The image depicts the retinue formed by the Emperor Montezuma and his nobles, organised to meet Hernán Cortés and welcome him as he entered the city of Mexico-Tenochtitlán, the Aztec capital. This work is part of a set of 24 panels produced using the technique of ‘enconchado’. This passage of the Conquest of Mexico was narrated by numerous chroniclers, who served as inspiration for the authors of several pictorial series in which the images depict the most significant events of the story. The series is signed in 1698 by two painters who lived in Mexico City, the capital of the Viceroyalty of New Spain: Juan and Miguel González, the most famous artists in the production of enconchados. The entire ensemble was commissioned for King Charles II and from the beginning of the 18th century it became part of the royal collections. In the enconchados, the pictorial layer is combined with fragments of mother-of-pearl arranged on a preparation of plaster applied to a wooden support, often covered with canvas. The production of this type of work can be traced to Mexico between the mid-17th and 18th centuries.

Gonzalo Pizarro and the great encomendero rebellion

11-minute video analysing the figure of Gonzalo Pizarro (Trujillo, Spain, ca. 1510 – Cuzco, Viceroyalty of Peru, 10 April 1548) Spanish conquistador, younger paternal brother of Francisco Pizarro and one of the main actors in the conquest of Peru and the civil wars between the conquistadors. He led the great encomendero rebellion of 1544 against the Spanish crown in protest at the passing of the New Laws.

The documentary series The History of the World, “History as adventure, as drama, as destiny”, produced by the British channel BBC, shows with great realism some of the key events in world history, such as the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America, the atomic bomb or the death of Julius Caesar. Special attention has been paid to details such as clothing, city settings, etc. Specifically, chapter 5 deals with the conquest of the New World. Without doubt, the contact between the Spanish colonists and the natives of America and the repercussions of the gold plundering are depicted. Thus was born the extensive network of sea routes by which the English and Dutch controlled the world’s maritime trade in spices, furs and luxury goods such as tulips. Meanwhile, Europe was in the midst of terrible religious conflicts after the Protestant Reformation.

A series halfway between fiction and documentary, produced by Movistar Plus and Global Set, which stands out for its historical rigour. It narrates the main events of the process of exploration and conquest of the West Indies, as well as the expedition of Magellan and Elcano, which was the first to circumnavigate the Earth. It had 1 season and 8 episodes that left us wanting more.
